Well for my yearly service I had my lower unit's oil changed at the Dealers . I recieved a call that there were metal fragments in the gear case and Yamaha recommended changing the entire lower unit . I have never even come close to hitting anything with the prop so this was a mystery . I asked the dealer if they had taken the lower unit apart to see what had failed and they said no but it wasn't going to get better . Well I did not want the motor to fail in July and wait three months to get it fixed so I went ahead and changed the lower unit out . I went to pick the boat up and asked to see the lower units oil. Yes there was some very fine metal sediment in the oil but I really think the unit would have lasted for years by changing the oil annually. The dealer told me they may or may not even be able to pin point the origin of the metal sediment if it was or was not just a bearing. So after all this the dealer agreed to put the unit back on the motor and charge me a restocking fee. The dealer agreed to tear down the lower unit ;(which I assumed they would have done before replacing it ) , for a fee. The dealer agreed to replace the bearing that failed if they found one that did of course for a fee. At this point I am going to just call it a wash and sell my old lower unit on C.L. or E -Bay for $1000.00 . A new Yamaha lower unit is $2,000, an after market part is $1,700 and a rebuilt unit is $1,400. I place no warranty and won't accept any returns but really think this unit is ready to fill with oil and bolt on .
